Flashing Check Engine Light: Is It Safe to Drive?

Written by the certified mechanics at Elite Auto Repair Texas · 15+ years repairing cars across Texas

The short answer

No — a flashing check engine light means an active engine misfire, and continued driving can overheat and destroy the catalytic converter. Reduce speed, avoid hard acceleration, and get the car to safety and diagnosed as soon as possible.

What a misfire is

A cylinder isn't burning its fuel properly. Unburned fuel enters the exhaust and overheats the catalytic converter.

Common causes

Most often:

  • Failed ignition coil
  • Worn spark plugs
  • Clogged or leaking injector
  • Vacuum leak
  • Low compression
