Written by the certified mechanics at Elite Auto Repair Texas · 15+ years repairing cars across Texas

The short answer

Before buying a used car, verify the VIN and history report, inspect for collision and flood damage, check fluids and leaks, test drive at city and highway speeds, and get a professional scan to confirm codes weren't recently cleared.

Check the paperwork

Verify the VIN matches the title, look up a vehicle history report, and check for open recalls on the NHTSA website.

Exterior and frame

Look for mismatched paint, uneven panel gaps, and overspray — signs of past collision repair. Check under the car for frame rust or damage.

Flood damage red flags

In Houston and the Gulf Coast, flood cars are common. Watch for:

  • Musty smell or new carpet in an older car
  • Silt or water lines under seats and in the trunk
  • Corrosion on seat rails and wiring
  • Foggy headlights or gauges

Under the hood

Check oil color and level, look for leaks, and inspect belts and hoses. Milky oil can indicate a head gasket problem.

Test drive

Drive at city and highway speeds. Note shifting quality, braking, pulling, vibrations, and any warning lights.

Get a professional scan

A seller can clear codes right before you arrive. A professional scan shows whether emissions monitors are ready — a sign that codes were recently erased.
