The Complete Car Maintenance Schedule by Mileage

Written by the certified mechanics at Elite Auto Repair Texas · 15+ years repairing cars across Texas

The short answer

Change oil every 5,000–10,000 miles, replace air filters every 15,000–30,000 miles, flush brake fluid and coolant around 30,000–60,000 miles, and replace spark plugs around 60,000–100,000 miles. Most Texas drivers should follow the 'severe service' schedule.

Every 5,000–10,000 miles

The basics that keep everything else healthy:

  • Oil and filter change
  • Tire rotation
  • Fluid level check
  • Brake and belt inspection

Every 15,000–30,000 miles

Replace engine and cabin air filters — more often in dusty West Texas or construction-heavy suburbs. Inspect brakes and suspension.

Spark plugs, timing belt (if equipped), serpentine belt, hoses, and shocks/struts commonly come due.

Severe service applies in Texas

Most manufacturers define 'severe service' as frequent short trips, stop-and-go traffic, extreme heat, or towing. Most Texas drivers qualify — so follow the severe schedule in your owner's manual.
