Hybrid Car Maintenance: What's Different and What It Costs

Written by the certified mechanics at Elite Auto Repair Texas · 15+ years repairing cars across Texas

The short answer

Hybrids need the same oil, tire, and filter care as gas cars, plus attention to the 12V battery, inverter coolant, and hybrid battery cooling fan. Regenerative braking means brake pads often last much longer.

The 12V battery

Hybrids still use a small 12V battery to boot the system. When it fails, the car won't 'ready' even with a healthy hybrid battery.

Hybrid battery cooling

Many hybrids have a cabin-air intake that cools the battery. A clogged filter or fan can shorten battery life — especially in Texas heat.

Brakes

Regenerative braking reduces pad wear, but calipers can seize from lack of use. Inspect yearly.
