Why Does My Car Pull to One Side While Driving?

Written by the certified mechanics at Elite Auto Repair Texas · 15+ years repairing cars across Texas

The short answer

A car that pulls to one side is usually caused by uneven tire pressure, misalignment, or uneven tire wear. If it only pulls while braking, a sticking caliper is likely. Start by checking all four tire pressures.

Tire pressure and wear

A low tire creates drag on one side. Mismatched tires can also cause pull.

Alignment

Potholes and curbs knock alignment out. Uneven inner or outer tire wear is a clue.

Brakes

A stuck caliper drags one wheel; the wheel may feel hotter than the others after driving.

Suspension

Worn control arm bushings or ball joints change geometry under load.

Frequently asked questions

Can a road's slope cause pull?

Yes — roads are crowned for drainage, so a slight drift right is normal.
