How Long Do Tires Last in Texas, and When Should You Replace Them?

Written by the certified mechanics at Elite Auto Repair Texas · 15+ years repairing cars across Texas

The short answer

Most tires last 40,000–60,000 miles or about 6 years, whichever comes first. Replace them at 2/32 inch of tread (the Texas inspection minimum), but for wet-road safety consider replacement at 4/32 inch. Texas heat can cause dry rot sooner.

The penny test

Insert a penny upside down into the tread. If you can see all of Lincoln's head, you're at or below 2/32 inch.

Tire age

The DOT code on the sidewall ends in four digits showing the week and year it was made. Many manufacturers recommend replacement by 6–10 years regardless of tread.

Heat and dry rot

Cracking in the sidewall or between tread blocks is a sign the rubber is breaking down.

Make them last longer

Rotate every 5,000–7,500 miles, keep correct pressure, and fix alignment issues promptly.
