Tire Pressure Light On but Tires Look Fine? Here's Why

Written by the certified mechanics at Elite Auto Repair Texas · 15+ years repairing cars across Texas

The short answer

A tire pressure light with tires that look fine usually means one tire is 25% or more below the recommended pressure — often from a cold morning or a slow leak. A flashing TPMS light means a sensor fault. Check pressures with a gauge first.

Steady vs. flashing

Steady means low pressure. Flashing for about a minute and then staying on indicates a TPMS system or sensor problem.

Temperature changes

Tire pressure drops roughly 1 PSI per 10°F drop. Texas cold fronts commonly trigger the light overnight.

Slow leaks

Nails, bead leaks, and corroded valve stems can lose a few PSI per week.

Sensor batteries

TPMS sensors have batteries that typically last 5–10 years and can't be replaced separately.
